Doha is the capital of Qatar and with a population of 1,351,000 is the largest city in the state. Located on the coast of the Persian Gulf in the east of the country, it is Qatar’s fastest growing city, with over 50% of the nation’s population living in Doha or its neighbouring suburbs. Surrounding its downtown waterfront are numerous parks and the Corniche Promenade while on a man-made island, the I.M. Pei–designed Museum of Islamic Art houses an extensive collection from across the Muslim world, while at Souq Waqif, a traditional market, vendors offer items of traditional clothing, crafts and spices. Since 2004, Doha has been undergoing a huge expansion to its transportation network, including the addition of new highways, the opening of a new airport and an 85 km metro system is currently under construction.
